Chapter Twelve

The morning passed in a happy blur, my cheek still burning from the delicate kiss Leo had planted there quite by surprise. By the time we were directed to join the set, I’d dressed in my cool new filming pants and blouse, had my makeup done, and my hair teased into neater waves that seemed resistant to the humidity that hung in the air.

I’d checked and rechecked my notes and engaged in a few pleasant conversations with Penny and Declan while Beth scowled at us. Yet it was Leo’s words and the sweet brush of his lips on my cheek that seemed to dominate my thoughts. Reluctantly, I pushed those thoughts to the back of my mind so I could concentrate on the challenge that was due to be filmed.

“Welcome back and we’ve got a great show coming up for you as we near the finals,” said Rebecca to the camera, walking forward from her position in the center of the baking stations. Leo and Jack flanked her on both sides. “With only four contestants left to vie for just three spots in the semi-finals, the stakes are high.”

“We gave our contestants one word for their challenge today and it’s deceptively simple,” continued Leo, smiling into the camera. “Vegan! Are the contestants up to the challenge? We’ll soon find out.”

“Behind us is a pantry full of staples but the contestants will have to be careful what they choose because every ingredient must be plant-based or they’ll be disqualified,” continued Jack.

“Good luck, contestants. The clock is ticking!” said Rebecca with a shake of her hair.

“Cut! Great. Perfect lines,” said Miles. “Really nailed it, Jack.”

“Someone’s been practicing,” said Rebecca icily, sparing a look at Jack who grinned and nodded as Leo good-naturedly slapped his back.

“Great, Jack! The camera likes what it sees,” called Miles before Rebecca could add another caustic comment. “Take five, everyone. We just got a shadow across Leo during Jack’s lines so we’re going to take that from the top. Lighting! Let’s block that again.”

“Amateurs,” muttered Rebecca, rolling her eyes as she turned away from the camera and went back to her starting spot.

“They can’t help the sun moving,” said Leo, following her.

“Sure they can. If they’d blocked the cameras properly before we started filming, that wouldn’t be an issue. That’s why I’m insisting on a proper set being built for my new show. No sunlight. No weather, and—” she glanced around, then, without bothering to lower her voice, added, “—no contestants.”

“Are you having guests?” asked Jack.

She fixed him with a contemplative look. “Are you pitching for a guest spot?” she replied with a sad tilt of her head.

“I, uh, no, just asking,” replied a flustered Jack.

“Next, you’ll want a show all your own,” she snorted, half-turning away.

“I don’t think I’m interested in a TV show,” said Jack.

“Yet, here you are,” she remarked, waving a hand across the set, “doing a TV show.”

“I didn’t ask for it. All Star Bakers came to me.”

“Is that so?” Rebecca arched one eyebrow and cast a look around the set.
